Easy to get here... hard to leave. Geologist classify our area as being originally a part of the ocean changed by massive interval upheavals and covered with ice a mile thick. It then was flooded by a lake which covered the present city of Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada with as much as 400 feet of water. Gradually the lake drained to the North leaving rich fertile valleys and rolling hills with a heritage of wealth and beauty. A mammoth lake in Western North Dakota flowed into the area with such force and violence that deep gorges were formed. The beautiful Pembina River Gorge forms the impressive backdrop for Frost Fire, by far one of the most beautiful areas in North Dakota.

On summer weekends, many visitors spend the day shopping in the area, golfing or trekking through the hills, then settling in for the evening performance at the covered amphitheater, which has captured the heart of visitors as they come to Frost Fire to enjoy musical theater classics.
Situated on the north shore of Lake Renwick, camping, boating, swimming and fishing for northern pike and other game fish are popular activities. Within the park are the Pioneer Heritage Center and restored historic buildings, which provide a glimpse of North Dakota's homesteading heritage. An early homestead preserves North Dakota's pioneer spirit, while the Gunlogson State Nature Preserve, a 200-acre natural wooded area along the Tongue River, provides a sanctuary for plants, birds and wildlife.

Icelandic State Park is located 5 miles west of Cavalier, ND, on Highway 5, near the U.S./Canadian border.
