The 2024 State Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, March 18th at the Bismarck Event Center. 

 

The North Dakota Spelling Bee program is funded primarily by sponsor grants. The program is managed and administered by the North Dakota Association of County Superintendents (NDACS).

 

The North Dakota Spelling Bee consists of three levels of competition: school, county, and state. It is open to students from public schools, private schools, and homeschools (or school district-based homeschool associations).

 

Public, private, and homeschools all need to enroll with state AND national to have their students eligible to advance from the county bee competition to the State Spelling Bee in March.

Public or Private School Fee: $80 per school  

Homeschool Fee: $8 per student* 

*Homeschools should calculate “per student” fees based upon the quantity of ALL students attending the homeschool, regardless of participation in the local spelling bee.  

 

New this year is ONLINE REGISTRATION. Please complete and select your form of payment. You have the option to pay online via PayPal or mail a check to the address at the bottom of this page.  

 

Schools must be enrolled BOTH with state and national for students to be eligible to advance from the county bee competition to the State Spelling Bee.

School Spelling Bees – Enrollment with Scripps provides access to tools for the school level of competition. 

 

County Spelling Bees – The Scripps Regional Qualifier Competition List for use at the county level competition will be emailed to each county coordinator in December. Information packets to provide to county winners advancing to the state competition will be emailed to county coordinators in January. 

 

Each county can send two students from the County Spelling Bee to compete at the State Spelling Bee. Competitors must be from schools that are fully enrolled with state AND national prior to the deadlines.  If a county winner or runner-up is unable to attend, an alternate may be sent.

Student Registration Due: 02/28/24

Please complete the online Student Data Form for each county winner advancing to the State Spelling Bee. Submit one registration per student. This information must be submitted online for students to have information printed in the participants booklet at the State Spelling Bee.

 

For those traveling to Bismarck the night before the event, a block of rooms is reserved at the Bismarck Hotel and Conference Center at a discounted rate. If you would like to reserve a room, please call 701-660-8063 by March 4th and mention “Spelling Bee”.

Scripps Study Guide

Scripps “2024 Words of the Champions” is the official study guide of the State Spelling Bee. Schools have access to this study guide with their Scripps login and password. Please note that the oral session at the State Spelling Bee will consist of words from “2024 Words of the Champions” as well as additional dictionary words (from Merriam-Webster Unabridged) that are not included in the study guide.
